Assefa caused a shock at last year’s Berlin Marathon which she won in a then Ethiopian record time of 2:15:37. It was just Assefa’s second marathon after she made her debut in Riyadh in March 2022 where she finished seventh. Her background is over the shorter distances on the track. She was an 800m specialist and becomes the first woman in history to break two minutes in the 800m and 2:20 in the marathon. She competed in the 800m at the 2016 Olympic Games but an Achilles injury meant she then had to turn her attentions to road racing.

The former world record holder and two-time London Marathon champion. Kosgei has had an indifferent and injury-plagued time since her last win in London, in 2020. She won the 2022 Tokyo Marathon but dropped out of the 2023 TCS London Marathon after barely 200m. But a fourth-place finish in the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon followed by a win at the Abu Dhabi Marathon showed signs of a return to the imperious form she demonstrated between 2018 and 2020, during which time she set her PB (and then world record) of 2:14:04 in Chicago.

Chepngetich is the two-time Bank of America Chicago Marathon champion and the 2019 world champion over the marathon distance. Chepngetich is the fourth-fastest woman in history over the marathon distance with her PB of 2:14:18, which was set when winning the 2022 Chicago Marathon. She enjoys running in Chicago, running in the windy city on three occasions, winning twice and finishing runner-up to Sifan Hassan last year. Chepngetich made her London Marathon debut in 2020 and finished in third place after being passed in the closing metres by USA’s Sara Hall. Her sister, Rosefline Chepngetich, represented Kenya at the 2015 World Championships in the 3000m steeplechase.

Almaz ran the fastest ever debut marathon by a women at last October’s TCS Amsterdam Marathon when she won in 2:17:20. The performance should have come as no surprise as Ayana stepped up to the marathon distance after a glittering career on the track which included a famous gold medal in the 10000m at the 2016 Rio Olympics when she put on an imperious display of front running that saw her not only become Olympic champion but break the world record in the process. She has also won world titles on the track at 5000m (2015) and 10000m (2017). She had a break of three years following her last track race in 2019 and her win at the 2022 TCS Amsterdam Marathon due to first injury and then giving birth to her first child. Ayana was born in Wenbera, Benishangul-Gumuz Region, Ethiopia. Born the seventh youngest of nine siblings, she started running at local school at age 13–14. She is married to her childhood friend-and longtime partner, Soressa Fida.

She made her debut at the 2022 Hamburg Marathon where she finished in a time of 2:17:23, at the time the fastest marathon debut in history. In 2023, she backed this up with a fifth-place finish in her second attempt in London, and another fifth-place finish in the World Athletics Championships. De Rozario is the reigning Paralympic and Commonwealth Games marathon champion and was the first Australian woman to win the London Marathon when she clinched victory in 2018. Debrunner made an emphatic start to her marathon career in 2022, when she won on her debut over the distance at the BMW Berlin Marathon and claimed victory in London just a week later. She continued her fine form in 2023, setting a world record (1:34:16) as she won the Berlin Marathon for a second successive year. Debrunner then won both the major US marathons in the autumn – Chicago and New York – while setting a new course record of 1:38:44 in the Windy City. In May 2023, Debrunner won the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability award. She was third at last year’s London Marathon.

Her best recent result was a third-place finish in London in 2021, but she is best known for her achievements in the 2010s. McFadden made history in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 as the only athlete to win four Abbott World Marathon Majors races in one year: London, Boston, Chicago and New York City. She has won four London titles, five in Boston, nine in Chicago and five in New York. Her PB time of 1:31:30 was set in Duluth, however, that course is ineligible for records due to the gradient. Born in Russia with spina bifida, McFadden lived in an orphanage for the first six years of her life until she was adopted by an American family from Maryland.

Den Boer finished fourth in her most recent attempt in London, in 2021, but has struggled with injury since then. She won the London Marathon at just her second attempt, causing a huge shock in the elite-only race held during Covid in 2020, and followed that up by winning a bronze medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. Den Boer has spina bifida and is an ambassador for the Johan Cruyff Foundation.

Kenenisa Bekele is one of the greatest endurance runners in history and the third-fastest marathon runner of all time thanks to his time of 2:01:41, which he ran at the Berlin Marathon in 2019. Now aged 41, Bekele set a masters (over-40s) world record at the 2023 Valencia Marathon when he ran 2:04:19 to finish fourth. 

Bekele has run the London Marathon on five occasions, placing third on his London debut in 2016 and then improving to runner-up in 2017, which remains his highest-placed finish in the race. Before moving up to the marathon distance, Bekele had a glittering career on the track – winning three Olympic and five World Championship gold medals. Notes: Belfast-born Scullion gave up athletics after the 2016 London Marathon when he tore his quad and missed out on a qualifying time for the Rio Olympics. Despondent with the sport, he spent time playing rugby and enjoying life with friends before realising how much he missed running. Weir is the most successful elite athlete in the history of the London Marathon with an incredible eight victories. Incredibly, 2024 will also be his 25th consecutive London Marathon since his debut in 2000. He won the Mini London Marathon seven times as a junior and is still the only male athlete, wheelchair or able-bodied, to win both mini and senior events. He is a six-time Paralympic gold medallist, having won two at the Beijing 2008 Games and four at London 2012 when he was nicknamed ‘Weirwolf’. He is coached by Jenny Archer and together they run the Weir Archer Academy in Surrey. He was born with a severed spinal cord and started racing aged eight.

Romanchuk is arguably Hug’s most consistent closest challenger. The American, who won the 2019 London Marathon, finished runner-up to Hug at the 2023 Berlin, Chicago and New York Marathons.  The American has previously won all the Abbott World Marathon Major races in the US: Boston, Chicago and New York. He started this season well with a second-placed finish in the first AWMM of the year in Tokyo. Born in Baltimore with spina bifida, he now lives in Urbana where he is part of the Illinois Wheelchair Racing Team. Nicknamed ‘Rocket Man’, he is known for his long, powerful arms – his wingspan measures two metres.

Suzuki started the season brilliantly, winning the first AWMM of the year in Tokyo – adding to his previous win there in 2020. Cassidy won his only London Marathon title to date in 2010, which was his debut in the race. His other major marathon win came in Boston in 2012 when he set the fastest wheelchair marathon time ever (1:18:25). However, as the time was set in Boston, it is not an official record – as the course is ineligible for records due to the gradient. The eldest of 10 siblings, Cassidy was diagnosed with cancer of the spine and abdomen weeks after he was born and given a low chance of survival. He is a professional graphic designer and illustrator.

Pike finished sixth in his most recent London Marathon, in 2022, with his best finish in the capital coming in 2021 when he was fifth. He was the fastest T54 racer in the world in 2019 thanks to his superb winning time of 1:20:59 at the Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth. Pike injured his spine aged 13 when he was accidentally shot during a deer-hunting trip in Virginia. He is also a cross country skier and biathlete.
